Proxinvest observes a strong drop of the investors confidence in 2009.
The participation to the keeps increasing in France averaging 68.8% of the capital against 68,3% en 2008 for the SBF 250 companies. Among the 450 European companies of the MSCI index the participation French companies even ranks third exceeding the European participation average of 61.9 %. Spain ranked top because of the special dividend attached to the vote participation.
However the number of voting shareholders dropped for French companies to less than 8% of the total number of shareholders because of the lack of interest of French elites and banks for individual shareholding.
In 2009, shareholders contestation increased significantly from a 2008 average of 4,8% of votes for sur le CAC 40 companies up to 5.9% en 2009. Except for Belgium where 25 resolutions were withdrawn or rejected at Fortis, French companies have the highest critical vote rate in Europe.
The number of rejected resolutions at French companies reached 60 - also the highest number in Europe and the number of external resolutions was of 62.
Active shareholders democracy , yes, but also a demonstration of a lack of confidence in the management at French companies.
